This is a subject many women research privately for months before mentioning it to anyone. It sits at the intersection of health, comfort and confidence, and the information available online swings between clinical detachment and marketing that overpromises.

This guide aims for neither. Here’s what vaginal rejuvenation actually is, who tends to seek it out, and what to expect.

What Is Vaginal Rejuvenation?

The term covers a range of non-surgical treatments that use energy — most commonly radiofrequency — to address changes in intimate tissue.

The mechanism is the same principle applied elsewhere in aesthetic medicine. Controlled energy delivered into tissue stimulates collagen and elastin production, improving tissue quality and tone over the weeks following treatment.

What it is not: surgery. There are surgical procedures in this area, and they’re a separate category with different risks, recovery and outcomes. Non-surgical treatment involves no incisions, no general anaesthesia, and minimal downtime.

Common Reasons Women Consider It

The reasons cluster into a few areas, and most women arrive with more than one.

After childbirth. Vaginal delivery stretches tissue, and while significant recovery happens naturally, some changes persist. This is one of the most common reasons women look into treatment, often years after the birth itself.

Perimenopause and menopause. Declining oestrogen reduces tissue thickness, elasticity and natural lubrication. The resulting dryness and discomfort are extremely common and rarely discussed.

Comfort during intimacy. Discomfort, reduced sensation, or simply feeling different than before.

Mild stress urinary incontinence. Leaking with coughing, laughing or exercise. This is worth flagging clearly: incontinence has multiple possible causes, some requiring medical assessment. It should be evaluated by a physician rather than assumed to be a candidate for aesthetic treatment.

Confidence. Difficult to quantify and frequently the underlying driver. Many women describe the change as feeling less like themselves.

How the Treatment Works

Radiofrequency energy is delivered through a specialised applicator, both internally and externally depending on the concern being addressed.

The energy warms tissue to a controlled temperature — sufficient to trigger a collagen response, well below any level that would cause damage. Temperature is monitored throughout, and the applicator moves continuously rather than delivering energy to any single point.

The experience: most women describe a sensation of warmth rather than pain. Treatment typically takes 20–30 minutes. There’s no anaesthesia required and no recovery period — you can drive yourself home and return to normal activity immediately.

Sessions: a course of three treatments spaced several weeks apart is typical, with maintenance sessions afterwards depending on individual response.

Results: develop gradually over the weeks following treatment as collagen remodels, rather than appearing immediately.

Who Is a Good Candidate?

Generally suitable for women experiencing the concerns above who are past the immediate postpartum period and not currently pregnant.

Not suitable during pregnancy, breastfeeding, active infection, or in the presence of certain medical conditions. Anyone with an IUD, a history of pelvic surgery, or ongoing gynaecological concerns should discuss this specifically at consultation.

Requires medical assessment first if you’re experiencing pain, bleeding, significant incontinence, or any symptom you haven’t had evaluated. Aesthetic treatment is not a substitute for a gynaecological workup, and any clinic that suggests otherwise is one to leave.

Privacy and Comfort

This matters more here than in almost any other treatment area, and it’s a reasonable thing to ask about directly.

At Beauty & Laser, these consultations are conducted privately with a female practitioner. Treatments are performed under delegation from a licensed physician, in line with Ontario requirements.

Questions worth asking any clinic: who performs the treatment, what their qualification is, whether the consultation is private, and what the protocol is if you decide partway through that you’d rather not proceed. The answer to the last one should be that you stop, immediately, with no pressure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does it hurt? Most women describe warmth rather than pain. No anaesthesia is used or needed.

How soon can I resume normal activity? Immediately, in most cases. Some practitioners advise avoiding intercourse for a short period afterwards — this will be covered in your aftercare instructions.

How long do results last? Typically 12–18 months, with maintenance sessions extending the benefit. Individual response varies considerably.

Is this covered by OHIP? No. Non-surgical aesthetic treatments in this category are not covered.

Will it help with incontinence? Some women report improvement in mild stress incontinence. This is not guaranteed, and incontinence should be assessed by a physician first to establish the cause.

Do I have to talk about why I want it? Only as much as is clinically necessary. A good consultation establishes what you’re experiencing and whether treatment is appropriate — not your reasons for wanting to feel better.
